Umar

Umar was a participant in the Understanding Chemical Bonding Project.

He was interviewed on 4 occasions: 3 times in his first year of Advanced level (i.e. equivalent to Y12 in the English School System) and once in the second year (Y13).

Umar's understanding of science

Chlorine is more electronegative because it has got the greater tendency to attract an electron from another atom

Covalent bonding is when atoms share electrons to combine into one whole thing

Making sense of polar bonding: Chlorine will donate more electrons to the carbon-chlorine bond than carbon, because carbon has got less

Sharing the same shell and electron makes them more joined together like one

The electron on the outer shell of an atom of sodium will fall out

The chlorine atoms share electrons to fill in their shells
