Sir Joseph John Thomson (1856 – 1940) is usually known as J. J. Thomson. He is best remembered as the discoverer of the electron, and was awarded the 1906 Nobel Prize in Physics "in recognition of the great merits of his theoretical and experimental investigations on the conduction of electricity by gases" (The Nobel Prize website) .
