allergic responses are like having different PIN codes

Categories: Comparisons

An example of an analogy used to explain sicence in public discourse:

"the immune system when it goes into an allergic response it has several, what are called, biological pathways. So, if you think of it like a PIN code, and you have ten numbers to fill out the PIN, your body can take thirty thousand different ways to go into an allergic reaction, which is why most of us do not have the same type of reaction, so you and I might be allergic to shellfish, but I might just get a mild upset stomach whereas you may end up in the emergency room with an anaphylactic event."
