An xampel of metaphor in publi cscience discourse:

"…anti-depressants – as far as we know, these drugs work by effecting neurotransmitters which carry messages within the brain"

Horatio Clare was presenting an episode ('Medication') of BBC's 'Is Psychiatry working?'

[I consider this must be metaphorical, as otherwise it commits a category error – nothing is transferred to, and then from, the neurotransmitter.]
