An example of an alternative conception:

Some learners think that plants only respire at night when it is too dark for photosynthesis. Although photosynthesis is only possible when there is sufficient light, all living cells need to constantly respire to power all their biochemical processes.

This misconception likely is encouraged by thinking that respiration and photosynthesis are opposite processes (which is true in some, but not all, respects), or seeing photosynthesis and resipration as alternative ways that plants obtain energy (rather than both being needed as part of an overall system).
