Jakob Johann Freiherr von Uexküll (1864 – 1944) was a German biologist, especially noted for his theoretical contributions. He introduced the notion of the Umwelt which considered how the world is perceived (differently) by different creatures given their size and modes of perception, etc. He saw organisms as parts of wider systems, and was influential on the development of cybernetics.
