The repertory grid technique

A topic in research methodology

George Kelly (1963) originally developed Personal Construct Theory (PCT) for use in counselling, but his (constructivist) ideas and elicitation techniques have been found to of much wider value.

Research tools

Kelly’s theory developed from his work as a psychologist/counsellor. He devised research techniques to explore his client’s ‘construct systems’ of their worlds:

The repertory grid method

The repertory grid technique goes beyond the construct repertory test, by asking the informant to make discrimination on each of personal constructs elicited, for each element: on which pole construct does each element best fit? Often a 5 or 7 point scale is employed and each element is rated according to where it fits between the two poles

A repertory grid rating elements (albums, top row) 1-5 on the constructs (first column) elicited in the construct repertory test. 1 matches the elicited pole (the construct label) and 5 is the opposite (tacit) pole.

“The Repertory Grid is a technique, or instrument, used to investigate a person’s system of constructs. The Grid is literally that, a grid, with columns referring to the 'elements' being considered, and rows the constructs elicited.

Quantitative analysis

So this method uses quantitative methods which imply an objectivist or positivist stance: it is assumed

  • there is a relative stable system of constructs (i.e., an ontological assumption), and
  • that it can be determined by the technique (an epistemological assumption, i.e., that the method produces a model that represents the underlying structure to a useful extent)

yet an idiographic one.

These calculations ensure that concepts with similar scores are grouped together in the focus grid. Similarly, attributes that have similar scores across the concepts are grouped together in the focus grid.”

Analysis of the grid can plot constructs (blue) and elements (red) in a kind of phase space (cf. factor analysis)

Dendograms

The grid can also be used to produce dendograms (tree diagrams) showing degrees of similarity across elements and across constructs.
