Disseminating research

Disseminating research through high impact journals: some challenges and strategies

A lecture given to the UTM Faculty of of Social Sciences and Humanities on 8th September 2020 as part of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities Adjunct Lecture Series.

Abstract:

Success in publication is only partially about the writing. Successful publication depends upon:

  • good quality (often English) writing
  • matching work to outlet (choice of journal for a particular study)
  • execution of study (data collection, data analysis)
  • design of study (methodology, choice of techniques, sampling…)
  • conceptualisation of study (e.g., choice and justification of a research question)
      • so perhaps location of a study in a research programme

The three core journal criteria that should be addressed by authors looking to be published in specific journals are journal remit, research quality, and novelty. The most prestigious journals look for originality in work, and will reject relevant, quality work that is not rated well on this criterion
