Sir John Frederick William Herschel (1792-1871) was a polymath who worked in astronomy and chemistry as well as mathematics, and writing philosophy of science, and being an early innovator in photography. He was the son of the composer and astronomer William Herschel and the nephew of the astronomer Caroline Herschel.
